Evolution of Birds of Ply

Zach began his artistic journey at Pratt Munson Williams Proctor Institute in Utica, New York. After completing his studies, he returned to Seattle and discovered his passion for craftsmanship at Kerf Design, a renowned cabinet shop. Immersed in the shop's creative environment, Zach found inspiration in the materials at hand—plywood and vibrant laminate—sparking a deep and evolving connection that transcends traditional furniture and cabinetry.

Birds of Ply is something fun I started making years ago from parts of art panels I made. While different sections of each panel would be scattered around the studio, some sections wouldn’t make it to the final process. These sections would be cut up on a massive bandsaw at The cabinet shop where I work. While cutting away I would make curves and follow certain scribed laminate lines. Each little cut out would look like different animals. Like seeing a face in a grain of wood or an image in a popcorn ceiling. The shapeof birds was most  prominent. These sculptures are a small branch off of the many other thing I make.
